We are committed to helping women access hygienic menstruation products

Myna Mahila is a charity very close to my heart, as I was born in the Indian subcontinent and raised in the UK. Every summer we would go back and visit relatives and the majority of my female relatives would ask me to bring them sanitary towels from the UK.

I was very shocked to see how hard it was for them to access sanitary products. Menstruation and talking about menstruation, is often considered taboo throughout the Indian subcontinent. Shops that sell sanitary products are usually run by male shopkeepers and my relatives, as well as many other women, were often too embarrassed to ask for them.

A lot of the women who lived in more rural areas used cloth rags, which were not disinfected properly and as a result, they would get infections and suffer in silence. There is a huge stigma and shame associated with discussing menstruation, which is hard to imagine living in the UK where it is easy to access these products.

In the name ‘Myna Mahila’, Myna’ represents the chatty Myna bird and ‘Mahila’ is the word for women. Suhani Jalota set up the Myna Mahila Foundation, they want to help break down the taboos surrounding menstruation and encourage women to discuss them out aloud like the chatty Myna bird.

The Myna Mahila Foundation employ women from urban slums in Mumbai to manufacture and sell affordable sanitary pads back into their communities, improving menstrual hygiene, providing stable employment, and building a trusted network.

We’re donating 10% of our profits to the Myna Mahila Foundation.
